Issue #18 • The Messiness of Motherhood and the Beauty Within It.
Content creator and fashionista Jayme Sy, aka TheHellaJam, gives us a dose of unfiltered motherhood.
Today’s newsletter kicks off the #BombMoms series where I highlight amazing Mamas from all walks of life to serve as inspiration for us fellow moms and moms-to-be, while uplifting their unique stories. 👯♀️ These will be sprinkled into both Monday and Thursday newsletters from time to time. Hope you enjoy!
I first met Jayme (aka TheHellaJam) when we were both involved in a women-focused event. The organizers hired photographers to shoot group photos of all the participating panel speakers, small business owners, and influencers (whose closets we could shop) leading up to the event. The space where we gathered was a large loft with expansive windows and the sunshine beamed in unbridled, bouncing off of every wall and saturating the room with warmth and light. The smell of coffee permeated the air and the room was alive with the chatter of women’s voices, all of them excited to be there and to be meeting one another — some old friends, some new.
Once we were done taking photos and folks continued mingling, Jayme and I eventually found our way to one another. I was drawn to her. She was a fellow Filipina, I could tell — we Filipinos can spot each other from a mile away 😆 IYKYK. She was outgoing, quirky, and had an infectious smile and laugh that felt genuine and approachable. She was pregnant with her first child at the time, and while she told me it was unplanned, it was clear that she was down for the ride. We talked about a lot in a short period of time, and none of it was small. I love people who cut the small talk and get straight into the substantive stuff, and she was definitely one of those people. We instantly exchanged info and we’ve followed each other ever since.
“I feel like parents are constantly just trying to survive. Something always has to be pushed back. I think the biggest thing is getting comfortable with the chaos. Once I stopped trying to control everything or wishing my brain could be more organized like other moms, I found peace in the chaos.”
